My son sent a text in the family group chat.
“Does anyone have the Halloween picture of me in my dinosaur costume?”
One minute later, there it was.
All three kids on the porch of the house they grew up in. Ages 2, 6 and 8. A dinosaur, a cheerleader and a witch.
The image must have sparked something. The next text was an audio message. One of them, singing the song I taught them to remember our address. Then another. The phone number song.
We moved out of that house with the wraparound porch six years ago. The memories, they came with us.

TODAY’S PICKS
THE FEATURE
Sequins at 64.
Two years ago she didn’t know Latin ballroom was a thing. Now she has a dance partner, a red dress and a body she’s deciding whether to let people see.
THE REFLECTION
My Friend And My Duck.
She came home from her friend’s funeral and went for a walk to shake it off. A duck followed her. For a long, long way.
Settle a Debate.
Fitted sheets. Do you actually try to fold them, or just roll them into a ball and shut the closet door?
THE WILDCARD
Can’t Whistle? It’s Not You, It’s Mouth Geometry.
About half of adults can’t whistle. It has nothing to do with talent, and there’s a reason it gets harder after a certain age.
My answer:
Spanish lessons. On paper, I’m fluent. Out loud, not so much.
